About Kelly

I have benefitted from a wonderful music education. I began taking lessons from Patricia Pinkston when I was five years old, and she saw me through all the way to University. There I received a four-year music scholarship and studied privately with Dr. Michelle Kesler. I participated in the Chamber and Philharmonic orchestras for several years, and in my final year I acted as the principle cellist in both orchestras. As the principle cellist, I worked closely with the conductor, made decisions about bowing and fingerings, and led my classmates in section rehearsals.

Post university, I have continued to develop as a solo and orchestra musician. In 2021, I studied with Professor David Requiro in Boulder Colorado. And in 2022, I traveled to Italy and joined the Mediterranean Opera Studio and Festival in performing four operas: Verdi’s Rigoletto, and Puccini’s La Boheme, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi. With such a massive amount of music in our binders, I learned how to prioritize my practice time. And I watched as our conductor made similar decisions in how to prioritize rehearsal time, collaborate with the opera folk on stage, and still inspire growth within the orchestra. I also received private lessons from Dr. Paolo Ognissanti of the Conservatory of Lucca, and learned to play more freely in the distinctive Italian style.

Now that I have settled in Salt Lake City, I am opening my cello studio again to new students. I love the cello and am eager to connect with those in the valley!

Lessons

I teach private cello lessons out of Salt Lake City and Alpine, Utah. I enjoy working with students of all ages and believe that anyone who enjoys the cello can learn to make it sing. In fact, I want my students to be able to pick out a new melody on the cello as easily as they can with their voice. And for this I primarily use the Suzuki method and repertoire, although I also supplement with other songbooks, scales, etudes, and folk music. I expect my students to practice consistently and encourage them with passion and positive reinforcement.

If you are interested in learning more, please give me a call or an email (or better yet shoot me a text) and I will get back to you. I would love to set up a free trial lesson and hear more about you or your child.
